Teetotal Vegetarianism - Day 1 May 5th 2009

After only 24 hours of no steak and ale the shivers have already set in. It seems that this is not going to be an easy ride. Thus far the need for alcohol has been negligible (after a 3 day drinking binge it seems my body is well stocked) but the craving for meat is higher than that of a zombie in a no-budget horror movie.

In a shocking twist, akin to adding a second bullet into a game of Russian roulette, the stakes have been raised even further. More money in the pot but the last bastion of animal flesh has been removed. No seafood allowed!

I've also decided to sample a vegetarian food type each day and review it from a Carnivore’s perspective. So today’s Vegetarian Dish of the Day is:

Quorn Surprisingly Versatile Wafer Thin Chicken Style Slices.

Box Blurb: 'Quorn Deli wafer thin chicken style slices are made with mycoprotein, with a chicken style flavour. Mycoprotein is a nutritious member of the fungi family which is naturally low in fat.’

The somewhat ambiguous labelling does nothing to distil my fear that Quorn is indeed made from people; but that aside I didn't find it all that bad. The texture is not unlike the meat it tries to copy; if not a slightly dry version. The taste and smell are exactly like Roast Chicken flavoured crisps. With that in mind I have to say it is not only surprisingly versatile but surprisingly pleasant and could quite easily be passed off as processed wafer thin chicken and would make a reasonable sandwich filler. I wouldn’t call it a win for vegetarian food though. An alternative to a product that is really mashed up chicken processed and flavoured, that doesn’t represent real chicken itself, is hardly something special. So whilst edible in its own right it has done nothing to swing me from proper sliced chicken breast as a sandwich filling. If only I wasn’t a month away from being able to eat that!
